A futuristic picture from a discount bodymod shop on the Moon…or maybe it’s under a dome at Spaceland, that sprawling orbital suburb in Alfred Bester’s The Demolished Man. It’s mostly his fault, after all, that my head’s ever full of weird outer space imagery. Some of which is in fact pretty dated…but still pretty fun, nonetheless.

Illustration Friday – Modify

So, this is like a four-million-year-old piece of animation, from back when I barely knew how to even turn on a computer, not that I’m all that much farther along now. The timing’s all off and the ideas, such as they are, aren’t really resolved. I think mostly I was trying to do an opening sequence for a really, really bad cartoon, since bad cartoons were always my favorite kind. About all I like now is the jumpy title card, ’cause of the triangular border. Anyway, I guess this is kind of a sketchblog, and although I wanna draw new stuff pretty bad, time’s just not cooperating at the moment, so I’m throwing out old stuff as I run across it while doing Other Work. I figure that, even if it’s not that great, maybe it’ll give me an idea for something in the future, which is usually how it works. Building sort of acceptable work out of the wreckage of old failed projects, that is. Many, many old failed projects.

Mister Roboto

Another animated sketchbook thing, the result of aimlessly goofing around for an hour. If there’d been another free hour, this guy’d probably have a couple of bird-like robot friends and a body of some sort and also perhaps a reason to exist. But, you know, there wasn’t an extra one of those hour things, so he’s out of luck and will probably always just be a floating head. Dang, though, I apparently need 40 thousand more years of practice just to make up for a couple years of being away from art. Oh, well, back to work…

Um, so I guess the title of this post is the title of the sketch, although the title could also be “Moonbot Mowing His Moon Yard.” Which I guess is mostly the same title, so, whatever. Anyway, if it wasn’t late I’d fix the fourteen things about the sketch that wandered away from the original image I had in my head, but it is late, so I won’t fix ‘em tonight, and really probably won’t ever fix ‘em, ’cause there are many other things I’ve gotta draw, and mistaken drawings are good for thinking about, at least, in a self-teaching sort of way.

Today’s task list is about five million tasks long, so I better go get started on all that stuff. Some of it’s even semi art-related, believe it or not. First, though, there was this great picture on the BBC site of a guy riding a wooden scooter. Apparently they’re having a festival somewhere in the Philippines, right at this exact moment. And that’s the full and complete extent of what I know this morning, except, I guess here are some more sketches from the olden times…new ones maybe next week.
